Cottage gardens. Borders. Best in groupings or massed. Delphiniums are the stars of the early summer border. Plants form a low mound of deeply-cut green leaves, bearing tall spikes of satiny flowers.
Special Note: Harmful if eaten.
Sun: Full Sun
Best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Also appreciates regular fertilization. Plants require protection from strong winds via sheltered growing positions and staking. After bloom, cut back spent flower spikes to the basal foliage to encourage an additional fall bloom. May be grown from seed and may self-seed in the garden. This is a short-lived perennial. It blooms quickly. Some gardeners prefer to grow this plant as an annual or biennial. For growth as an annual, purchase new plants in early spring or plant seed indoors 8-10 weeks prior to last spring frost date. For growth as a biennial, plant seed outdoors in the garden after last spring frost date for bloom the following year.
Delphiniums are generally susceptible to powdery mildew, botrytis blight, leaf spots and crown rot. Slugs and snails are sometimes visitors. Best performance occurs in Mediterranean-type climates with cool summers.
