Includes Perennials, Ferns, Ornamental Grasses, Alpines & Ground Covers
We have one of the finest selections of perennials in the area. You are sure to find what you are looking for here at Sabellico’s. We are always on the hunt for new varieties as well as stocking the old favorites. We select our plants for ease of care, long bloom time and deer resistance. We grow many of our perennials right here in our greenhouses in order to control the quality and health of the plants we sell.
Our experienced perennial staff is available from March thru the end of October to make suggestions or answer questions. If you don’t see what you want, just ask! It might be in the greenhouses because it is not ready for the sales yard yet or we might be able to special order it for you.
PERENNIALS are plants that do not die after a season’s growth but will renew themselves each year. With a few exceptions, they die back to the ground and enter a state of dormancy for the winter. Most perennials are herbaceous, which means their stems are green and soft, not brown and woody like those of a shrub. The soft growth dies in the fall but the roots remain alive and well underground. When spring arrives, new growth emerges from the roots. Sabellico’s carries perennials that are hardy in our area (Zone 5) with a few exceptions (tender perennials) that will do well in protected locations.
Perennials are popular due to their long-term value and broad range of uses. Whether grown for their flowers or their foliage, perennials can provide gardeners with years of pleasure. They are easy for the beginner because most require little maintenance; yet hold unlimited possibilities for the enthusiastic gardener.
FERNS are excellent landscape and woodland plants, giving an airy look or graceful accent to a garden. Ferns do well in shady, moist areas and require little maintenance. Ferns are distinguished by the variation in foliage and are generally avoided by deer and rabbits.
GRASSES (ORNAMENTAL) are extremely useful landscape plants that are noted for their form, foliage and flowers. Ornamental grasses create focal points and movement in any garden, provide winter interest, are generally easy to grow, don’t need much water or fertilizing once established and are deer resistant.
GROUND COVERS are usually low-growing plants often used as a substitute for turf grass, especially in shade or embankments or other areas where turf grasses don't grow well. Ground covers are also used to prevent erosion, cover bare earth and create a uniform appearance. We carry many ground covers. Some favorites are ivy, pachysandra, ajuga, thyme and phlox but there are many low growing perennials and shrubs that can be used as a ground cover.
ALPINES are great in rock gardens because they grow naturally in mountainous areas that encompass a variety of growing conditions and terrains: sun, shade, craggy cliffs, bogs, rocky pastures and meadows. These small plants do not like to have wet “feet” and do best in rocky, very well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. In the garden, they like gravelly, fertile, well-drained soil that mimics their natural habitat.
