Herbs

Herbs are used as natural culinary flavorings, fragrances, dyes, medicines and insect repellents. Researchers are rediscovering and continually adding to the large body of herbal knowledge and lore.

Herbs are easy to grow. Most prefer a sunny spot but will tolerate partial sun. They are quite disease resistant, need little fertilizer and are tolerant of drought. They can be planted outside in your garden or in a window box or patio planter. These plants are durable, aromatic, decorative and many can be taken inside for the winter.  Some are perennial and will come back year after year.

There is nothing like adding fresh herbs to any recipe. Most of our herbs are sold in pots but some of the more popular herbs (basil and parsley) are sold in packs. In the spring and summer, we have pre-planted Herb gardens in a variety of sizes and pots. Or, we can plant one for you with just the herbs you have selected. We have herbs in our greenhouses most of the year. That way you can have fresh herbs anytime.

Most years, we carry over 150 different herb varieties. We generally sell at least 15 different basils, 10 different mints, 16 different thymes and 12 different lavenders. While we grow many of the herbs that we sell, we do bring in some of the more exotic herbs from our wholesaler, Gilbertie’s Herbs in Connecticut. Gilbertie’s is USDA certified organic and grows the healthiest and highest quality herbs. We are lucky to have them right next door in Connecticut but they only sell to other greenhouses and do not sell directly to retail customers.  They do have an excellent website with tons of info on herbs that is worth taking a look at (www.gilbertiesherbs.com).
