Home
gardeners can create environments to attract hummingbirds
and butterflies. These graceful creatures can easily
be lured to your garden, patio or balcony by a variety
of plants. In addition to the Perennials and
Shrubs listed below, there are many annuals, wildflowers
and herbs that are also excellent food sources. For
example, design an area hat combines wildflowers and
attractors such as butterfly bush (Buddleia), bee balm
(Monarda), sage (Salvia) and foxglove (Digitalis).
To make a butterfly feel at home, you also need some
wind protection, since these insects prefer still air.
Tall plants make good wind breakers. Because butterflies
are cold-blooded, they seek warm air, so direct sun
is desired. They also like dark rocks warmed by the
sun for basking. A source of water is also important.
It must be shallow with something they can rest on.
Hummingbirds
are attracted to more than just red tubular flowers.
They feed from many types of flowers and prefer a mixture
of sun and shade. Different levels of vegetation and
an abundance of flowers that bloom throughout the season
will make them feel at home.
